Why, yes, I have a couple.

 

Last Saturday, five of us (four Guild members and one Hubby) demoed at the Scouts' Mountain Man Rendezvous in Santa Margarita. Many of the Scouts - Boys and Girls - wore their 1840's gear and attire.

 

 

 

 

We only had a couple of weeks notice but we managed to coordinate and bring books, lots of fiber, fiber processing tools, spindles, several spinning wheels, a variety of looms, and examples of knitted, woven, and felted textiles, home goods, and clothing.

 

I packed woven mug rugs, spindles, and the 10" Cricket loom warped with handspun.

 

 

 

We explained and/or demonstrated the process of turning raw wool into spinning fiber, then into yarn, then weaving the yarn into textiles and home goods.

 

 

 

 

The Kids, the Adults and all of us had a fun time.

Lesson 1. When warping the Wee Inkle Loom the position of the tension device needs to be forward.

Lesson 2. Not a good idea to start a new project at 9:30 pm. **

 

Today I cut the warp, moved the adjustment bar, and retied the warp.

 

I was able to weave 7 more inches before cutting off the warp, 30.5" woven band.

 

 

** The Wee Inkle came to me pre-warped by the Etsy Seller and had I reviewed her website pics I would have - hopefully - noted my warping mistake. Here's a pic of my loom from the website, warped beautifully and expertly by Arlisa M.

 Weaving: Work In Progress

 

Inspired by the Pineapples

I have been thinking about weaving an Inkle Band bag strap since the end of last December. That was when The Man's sister gifted us with two Water Bottle Holders that she created. Such a wonderful gift from a wonderful Sewist - the attention to detail, the fabric choice, and a zipper to boot. It cried out for a custom handwoven strap.

Today I finally sat down and got started with this new project.

First I chose the yarn colors, coordinating them with the Hawaiian print fabric.

Using the same pic I checked color value to make sure there were different value contrast. Looks good.

 

 

Next I used an Online Inkle Loom Pattern Generator and designed a 41-thread pattern with my four colors: Black, Cream, Green, and Gray.

 

 

I "wove" on a comb to preview the colors and design.

Since I am aiming for a 3/4 - 7/8" wide band and struggling to maintain it I think the weft is too thick. After almost 6" of weaving I decided to unweave back to the beginning and change to a thinner weft of 5/2 cotton instead of Crochet Cotton # 3 (~ 3/2 cotton).

Remake

I gave it a think and decided to reweave the wonky part of the Ena Band: "Award 2024". I still had over 2 yards of warp left and even though each thread had to be knotted individually in the correct color order the 69 threads went fairly quickly and easily.

 

At first I started playing with different motifs to add to the long sections of floats. But then I would have to redo the "Ena Marston" band so instead I decided to just redo the band with only one space between each number instead of two.

 

Oops, a typo, the "R" should have been an "A".

 

 

It's been a long day but the weaving is done.

Long Floats

So. The two sections of the Ena Band are woven and cut off the loom and, well, I'm not sure I like the way the "2024" came out.

I added extra spaces between the numbers so the bands would be equal in length but this made the floats long and the numbers - to me- are wonky, especially the number four.

 I will need to sleep on it and give it a think.

A typo would be a real bummer.
