Fleece in Public

The Fiber Project Display Board is completed and will be displayed at the Mid-State Fair tomorrow.

 

 

At the same time two teams from the Guild will compete with each other in a Sheep to Shawl competition.

They will start with clean (scoured) fleece → prep the fiber with hand cards →  spin singles on spinning wheels  → spin a 2-Ply yarn  → transfer the yarn to weaving bobbins → weave a shawl on a pre-warped 4-shaft loom. At the end of four hours the woven item will be judged. Yeehaw, good luck everyone.

 

Demo Ready

The Little Looms Group presentation I have been working on is finished.

 

 

Acrylic Yarn for Magic Knot Join.

 

Noro Kureyon yarn for both Spit Splice and Russian Join. I also have tapestry needles for Russian Join and Spray water bottles (🚫 Spit) for the Spit/Wet Splice Join.

 

Everything is ready and good to go.

 

July First

I spent today working on a presentation and demo that I will be giving during the July Little Looms group. I am calling it, "Knitting Joins for Weavers". I narrowed it down to my three favorite joins:

Magic Knot (Fisherman's Knot), Spit Splice (Wet Splice), and Russian Join.

I worked on the PDF handout and played with yarn.

 Central Coast Weavers Guild Picnic - fun times was had by all - and more yummy food.

 

 

Delish

Yesterday's Potluck before Little Looms Group was especially delicious. I am still thinking about it.

Why, yes, I have a couple.

 

Last Saturday, five of us (four Guild members and one Hubby) demoed at the Scouts' Mountain Man Rendezvous in Santa Margarita. Many of the Scouts - Boys and Girls - wore their 1840's gear and attire.

 

 

 

 

We only had a couple of weeks notice but we managed to coordinate and bring books, lots of fiber, fiber processing tools, spindles, several spinning wheels, a variety of looms, and examples of knitted, woven, and felted textiles, home goods, and clothing.

 

I packed woven mug rugs, spindles, and the 10" Cricket loom warped with handspun.

 

 

 

We explained and/or demonstrated the process of turning raw wool into spinning fiber, then into yarn, then weaving the yarn into textiles and home goods.

 

 

 

 

The Kids, the Adults and all of us had a fun time.

 

 

Sheep to Swatch

I volunteered to spin three Sheep Breeds for the CCW Guild's Fiber Project display board.

Funny, I just realized that all the fiber were spun on Bossie Suspended Spindles.

California Red Sheep Wool

 

 

 

CVM/Romeldale Sheep Wool 

I was able to use Ember's washed locks for the display but not her 2-ply lace-weight yarn.

I used some "CVM Small Mill roving" I had in my fiber stash to spin a DK-weight 2-ply yarn then wove a sample on a 4x4 Weave-it pin loom.

 

  

 Shetland Sheep Wool

 

 Lots of short bits (neps and noils) which made it a challenge to spin on the Lendrum wheel.

 

 

I used a Spindle. The slowness afforded me more time to pick out the loose fluffy bits to make a smoother, less textured yarn.

The Little Looms Group is giving May's Guild Meeting presentation. Our group will be sharing 11 types of Simple Looms: Rigid Heddle, Inkle/Card Weaving, Tapestry, Potholder, Round, Pin, Frame/Boom/Minnow, Back-strap, Kumihimo, Wave, and Nature weaving.

My topic is the Potholder Loom. "Dust off your 'ol Potholder Loom and have some fun!"

My Bullet Points:

• Portable: Take your Works in Progress anywhere. (Pic weaving on the couch and pic at the beach.)

• Fun: Scratch that creative itch with unique color combinations as well as Color-and-Weave effects.

•  Inexpensive: Weave with Kitchen Cotton yarns using Continuous Strand method to create functional and practical potholders and hot pads.

Socks To Go

Cast on a new pair of socks with Regia yarn, "Happy in Pink" colorway.

 

 

This new pair will accompany me tomorrow to the Guild SLO meeting so I can keep my hands busy knitting - around and around - while I enjoy this month's presentation:

 

“SAKIORI WEAVING” with Amanda Robinette. Sakiori (which simply means ‘rag-
weaving’) was a technique practiced by the Japanese peasant class for 200 years.
For cultural and environmental reasons, they developed this art to produce warm
clothes, not rugs as is more typical in the Western style of rag weaving. This talk
will explore how to implement Sakiori techniques to produce practical, beautiful

CCW Guild Holiday Party

I tried a little bit of everything, cleaned my plate, and went back for dessert. It was delicious.

 

 

Potluck Tuesday

The second Tuesday of each month is set aside for Little Looms Group. It's an all-day affair with Spinners' group in the morning and LLG in the afternoon.

In between - at noon - we eat. I brought Focaccia bread and homemade Vanilla ice cream.

The ice cream paired nicely with Pat's Ginger Spice cake. (Sorry, no pic, my hands were full.)

 

 

That's a Wrap

The Guild Sale weekend came to a close today. It was fun, busy, and everyone had a great time.

Today I brought a variety of spindles and fiber and taught folks how to spin.

 

 

I taught one gal to spin on a spindle three years ago and she comes back every year. She said she continues to spin and has knitted a hat with her spindle-spun yarn. Today she taught one of her friends how to spin. Very cool, right?

Tomorrow I will need to straighten the house and corral all my fiber, tools, yarn, and bits and bobs that have taken over downstairs and every horizontal surface.

When my fiber, tools, and yarns are stored away I can give The Man the "all clear" and he can come home from Ventura where he has been hiding out.

 

 

CCW 18th Annual Sale & Guild Showcase

First Day 1 - 6 pm

Thirty minutes before the doors opened to the public (there was already a line forming outside). A quick walk-through to snap a few pics before I headed upstairs to set up the Lendrum spinning wheel.
