My Subaru

My white Subaru Forester is almost a year old, we purchased it last May.

At the time I didn't want a new car but The Man was starting to question the reliability of my 2006 Forester, aka The Goat Mobile.

I am glad for the upgrades of the newer car.

Sheep to Swatch

I volunteered to spin three Sheep Breeds for the CCW Guild's Fiber Project display board.

Funny, I just realized that all the fiber were spun on Bossie Suspended Spindles.

California Red Sheep Wool

CVM/Romeldale Sheep Wool

I was able to use Ember's washed locks for the display but not her 2-ply lace-weight yarn.

I used some "CVM Small Mill roving" I had in my fiber stash to spin a DK-weight 2-ply yarn then wove a sample on a 4x4 Weave-it pin loom.

 Shetland Sheep Wool

Lots of short bits (neps and noils) which made it a challenge to spin on the Lendrum wheel.

I used a Spindle. The slowness afforded me more time to pick out the loose fluffy bits to make a smoother, less textured yarn.

Pics and Bullet Points

The Little Looms Group is giving May's Guild Meeting presentation. Our group will be sharing 11 types of Simple Looms: Rigid Heddle, Inkle/Card Weaving, Tapestry, Potholder, Round, Pin, Frame/Boom/Minnow, Back-strap, Kumihimo, Wave, and Nature weaving.

My topic is the Potholder Loom. "Dust off your 'ol Potholder Loom and have some fun!"

My Bullet Points:

  • Portable: Take your Works in Progress anywhere. (Pic weaving on the couch and pic at the beach.)
  • Fun: Scratch that creative itch with unique color combinations as well as Color-and-Weave effects.
  •  Inexpensive: Weave with Kitchen Cotton yarns using Continuous Strand method to create functional and practical potholders and hot pads.

  • Enjoy

Sunday DNF'd

Our niece Charlene wrote, "I just DNF'd (did not finish) "---- -- ------" . . .  I axed it at about 32%. Too many better ones out there".

She is wise, I am taking her advice:

Next Steps

The California Red Sheep wool is ready to be carded on the Clemes and Clemes Mini Drum Carder.

But first the scoured (washed) locks need to be fluffed open with the C&C Lock Pop.

I used a digital scale to weight the fluffed fiber.

Two passes through the drum carder, nice and slow.

Birds of Spring

I saw a Robin today. The swallows arrived over a week ago.

I look forward to the return of spring because with this heatwave it already feels like summer.

Today's high 94.3°.

Right Conditions

Today was the day, a perfect day,

✔ Warm and sunny with a gentle breeze

✔ Home alone (The Man and Nell are out at sea)

✔ Raw California Red Sheep wool 8 ounces

Today was the day to scour (wash) half a pound of raw fleece.

Two washes and two rinses per small mesh bag of fiber ~ 1.5 oz.

I dumped the water outside, not a single drop of lanolin-rich water went down the kitchen drain.
